Philae

The Landing and Exploration Technology department supported the landing of the comet lander "Philae" with experimental investigations and numerical multi-body simulations.

The objectives were to determine the safe operating limits of the landing leg and shock absorber system and to characterize the resulting landing dynamics in interaction with other system components and the expected geotechnical properties of the comet's surface.

The work was carried out in 2013 and 2014 and incorporated into the landing preparations and landing site selection.
