The further development of structural dynamic methods in the field of experimental structural dynamics, model validation and uncertainty management is the key area of work undertaken by the Institute in relation to the structural dynamics of aircraft. One of the main tasks involves conducting ground vibration tests, for which the Institute maintains a large, mobile facility with the necessary infrastructure and staff.
The scientific work carried out at the site on the structural dynamics of aircraft is geared towards the technical challenges in the development and testing of current and future transport aircraft. An important aim of this work lies in improving the quality of structural dynamic models and reducing the duration of structural dynamic tests, for which the large-scale facility is highly suitable.
The large facility plays a central role in third-party funded research, and is therefore used for many projects undertaken with industry. The facility’s equipment has the potential to identify and develop new scientific areas of activity, which often come to light following the work carried out during third-party projects (e.g. flight vibration testing and structural health monitoring).
