MARS

Manipulation of Reynolds Stress for Separation Control and Drag Reduction

MARS is a joint project co-founded by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the European Union within the 7th Framework Program. It was initiated by partners of the FP6 / FP7 projects "AeroChina" and "AeroChina II".

The global aims of MARS are:

  • To use the periodic flows embedded in two selected flow cases as platforms in which direct control of discrete dynamic structures to manipulate the Reynolds stress can be observed, measured and simulated
  • To measure, simulate and understand the impact of certain actuators upon discrete structures in a turbulent shear layer and to identify candidate actuators for further development for skin friction reduction and flow separation control at flight scales

The DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology, Department Experimental Methods, organizes a joint measurement campaign in a DLR wind tunnel and applies advanced flow measurement techniques to backward-facing step and NACA0015 models from project partners.

Participants from China:

  • AVIC-ARI
  • Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics
  • Tsinghua University
