For research programs and contractual work the Supersonic and Hypersonic Technology Department (HY) operates five major facilities:

  • Vertical Test Section Cologne (VMK)
Simulation of sea level conditions at Mach numbers up to 2.8. Mach number range 0.4 to 0.9 and 1.57 to 3.2, nozzle exit diameter 15 to 30 cm.

  • Trisonic Test Section Cologne (TMK)
Test section 60 cm x 60 cm, Mach numbers 0.5 to 5.7 with flexible nozzle. For Mach numbers between 0.7 and 1.3 a transonic test section with perforated walls is available.

  • Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Cologne (H2K)
Nozzle exit diameter 36 cm for the Mach number 4.8 and 60 cm for Mach numbers 5.3, 6.0, 7.0, 8.7 and 11.2.

  • Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel 2 Cologne (L2K)
Electrical power of 1.4 MW, nozzle exit diameter 10 and 20 cm, Mach numbers 4 to 8, total enthalpy 3 - 25 MJ/kg.

  • Arc-Heated Wind Tunnel 3 Cologne (L3K)
Electrical power of 6 MW, nozzle exit diameter 10 to 40 cm, Mach numbers 5 to 10, total enthalpy 6 - 25 MJ/kg.
