Objectives

Project MEGADESIGN

General objectives

MEGADESIGN is to realize the potential of the numerical simulation and optimization for the aerodynamic and multidiscipline development of aircraft more comprehensively, and to make it industrially usable. Thus the costs and development times are significantly reduced. Furthermore the safe employment of efficient computation and optimization procedures makes a detailed evaluation of new technologies and concepts as well as alternative configurations for future environmentalfair, safe and economical transport aircrafts possible, and supports their further development and adjustment.

A substantial goal of MEGADESIGN is - based on the MEGAFLOW network - the continuation of a research network, competent in the area of developing numerical methods, of industry, smaller enterprises, high-capacity universities and the DLR. Thereby it is to be guaranteed that on the one hand an effective transfer of technology is made possible from research to the industry. On the other hand a good basis for the training of qualified new generation forces and for the know-how receipt is created. The planned network will influence strongly the employment protection and competitive ability in the aviation location Germany.

Scientific and technical work objectives

The project MEGADESIGN will improve and develop the numerical tools and approaches further on the basis of the MEGAFLOW software, in order to meet the high requirements, which result in the context of the aerodynamic development process. The emphasis of the work is on the development of the abilities of the unstructured flow solver TAU. The following technical goals are pursued:

  • ensuring of a prediction accuracy of the aerodynamic achievement with less than 3% error range to the experiment for substantial partial configurations from the aerodynamic development process,
  • increase of computational efficiency per case by 50% in relation to the status at the start of the project,
  • guaranteed applicability of the Navier Stokes procedures for the entire flying range under use of approaches best possible for steady and unsteady flows for all relevant configurations,
  • utilization of multidisciplinary simulation by coupling those disciplines primarily taken part - aerodynamics, structure mechanics and flight dynamics - for the aerodynamic development by means of full automation,
  • automation of subprocesses in the aerodynamic detail design by numerical optimization,
  • multipoint optimization of 3D configurations,
  • use of multidisciplinary optimization procedures.
