At the moment, it is of vital interest for the Hermann-Föttinger-Institut to set-up a group of researchers concentrating on optical measurement techniques. Such a group is important to complete the institute’s portfolio after the retirement of Dr. Lehmann, a well known expert in laser anemometry and inventor of the Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). Mr. Röhle became his successor and is the institute’s lecturer for the subject of optical flow diagnostics.
Cooperation with the Berlin University of Technology
The Faculty V of the Technical University of Berlin and especially the Hermann-Föttinger-Institute are strongly involved in the areas of fluid mechanics, flow control and combustion and are therefore covering the fundamental scientific bases for the development work in the research fields of Power generation, Space and Transportation of the Helmholtz Association.
Two of the diagnostic techniques of the Helmoltz Young Scientists Group are intended for the use in combustion (FRS, FOM). One important reason for this decision was to enable an intensive cooperation with Professor Paschereit, who is setting up a combustion research group working with a new test rig with a 120 kW burner. This test rig will serve as a in-house test case for the developed measurement techniques.
Professor Paschereit expects from the future Helmholtz Young Scientist Group support in optical measuring techniques. Since his research activities are focused on practical industrial needs, the availability of modern experimental methods represents a decisive strategic aspect, especially with regard to the acquisition of industry resources. By collaboration with the Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group personal capacity for developing these measurement techniques are saved. Expensive test equipment can be jointly used and synergies are created.
In return, the Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group is provided with office space, an optical laboratory and access to the experimental facilities of the HFI, workshops and relevant infrastructure of the university.
