Introduction
Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Groups are intended to improve an existing link between a research center of the Helmholtz Association and a university by enhancing collaboration activities and knowledge exchange. Furthermore, these groups should advance Germanys next generation of scientists. This homepage belongs to a Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Groups at Berlin's University of Technology (TUB) equally supported by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the TUB.

Background
Technical flows play a major role in nearly all processes of energy generation and energy conversion, in aerospace and power generation as well as in automotive engineering. Substantial experimental progress is indispensable for research and development in these areas. Often only non-intrusive optical measurement techniques are effective diagnostic tools for these kinds of tasks, which is especially true for industrial development experiments. However, their measurement capabilities still need to be improved.

Strategy and scientific orientation
Strategically, the Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group plans to fill an unoccupied "market niche" in the area of turbomachinery research. The measurement techniques the group is focusing on are envisioned for applications where until today no routinely used techniques exist. Should the group succeed with the development of these tools, the measurement methods will therefore be without any competition.

Cooperation with DLR
The Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group will be closely linked to DLR, since the program topics and research goals shown above are primarily derived from the DLR's scientific orientation.

Cooperation with the Berlin University of Technology
The Faculty V of the Technical University of Berlin and especially the "Institut für Strömungsmechanik und Technische Akustik" (ISTA)are strongly involved in the areas of fluid mechanics, flow control and combustion and are therefore covering the fundamental scientific bases for the development work in the research fields of Power generation, Space and Transportation of the Helmholtz Association.

Team
The group includes one post-doc and at present three post graduates (PhD) as well as student workes. Among other strategic aspects,the measurement techniques are chosen to boost synergy effects within the group, since all three projects include the generation, processing and analysing of optical frequency signals. The orientation of the group towards cooperations with industry should ensure that members of the group will have good career opportunities after leaving the Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group.

Research program
The scientific goal of the Group is to analyse and to develop measurement systems for Transient Grating Spectroscopy, Acoustic Particle Image Velocimetry, Filtered Rayleigh Scattering and Fibre Optical Microfones, and to apply them. The final measurement set-up for each of the above techniques will result in building a functional protoype that will be tested in the test rigs of the Hermann-Föttinger-Institute and the DLR. If the developed techniques prove to be useful, the transfer of the technologies to companies selling measurement systems is planned.

The group is lead by Dr. Ingo Röhle.

Teaching obligations
Dr. Röhle is integrated in the teaching at Berlins University of Technology, taking over obligations of a 2-student-credit lecture on laser diagnostics with the title: "Laser-Doppler-Anemometrie I+II (LDA) - Laseroptische Methoden der Strömungsdiagnostik" which include final examinations. He supports doctoral candidates up to their graduation.
