The application of high-end numerical methods allow ever increasing insights into real flow phenomena as the computer systems keep on becoming more and more sophisticated. Hence it leads to the design of even more efficient and powerful turbomachinery.

In the past decade the project group Numerical Methods (being part of the Institute for Propulsion Technology of the German Aerospace Center “DLR”) established and developed the system TRACE (Turbomachinery Research Aerodynamic Computational Environment) in order to calculate and investigate flows in turbomachinery. Within the DLR, TRACE is the standard method used for flow calculations.
Outside DLR other researching institutes and universities are successfully using TRACE for their scientific analysis of complex flows in turbomachinery.
In cooperation with MTU-Aeroengines TRACE was implemented in the industrial development and optimization processes of turbomachinery.
Further development of modern CFD-systems will have a special focus on Aeroelasiticity, Aeroacoustics, Aero-thermodynamics, turbulence and the usage of supercomputers speed.


The main goal of the Numerical Methods Group is to: 

  • enhance and further develop the CFD software system TRACE
  • analyze aero-thermodynamic and aeroelastic flow phenomena in turbomachines
  • research and optimize gas turbines for air traffic and the stationary use of their components
