The Department of Engine Acoustics in the Institute of Propulsion Technology of the German Aerospace Center (“Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft und Raumfahrt”: DLR) focuses on unsteady processes in technical flows. Current research topics are the acoustics of turbo machines and solutions for reducing the noise of aero-engines, reduction of turbulence induced friction phenomena as well as the investigation and control of unsteady combustion processes.

The department maintains numerous contacts to engine and aircraft manufactures, to the Deutsche Bahn AG (the German Railway) and to government agencies. It participates in DFG (German Research Foundation) research programs and national as well as international research initiatives. These include the aeronautical research program of the German Federal Government, the environmental program aimed at developing a low-pollution aircraft engine and the European Framework Research Programs.

The department is located at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Technical Acoustics of the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin to which it is closely connected through a strong cooperation for decades.
