of Unsteady Combustion Processes

Analysis of Combustor Instabilities and Damping Methods

The Flame Lab team investigates the unsteady phenomena occurring in combustion systems with the focus on combustion acoustics. The main goal of our research activities is to improve the operation performance of combustion chambers by minimizing combustion instabilities and combustion noise.
Tools used in our analysis include laser-optical measurement techniques as well as methods for acoustic mode analysis.

Our research activities are in strong cooperation with the center of combustion research of our Institute (headquarter in Cologne)

Combustion Noise


The existence of the phenomenon of indirect combustion noise (entropy and vortex noise) could be verified by designated generic experiments and will be extensively investigated on a small combustion chamber.
