Design and Manufacture Technologies

Filament winding with glass fiber using a robot

The department of “Computer Supported Component Design” combines the construction, design and computation with the process and production technology to an offer of a holistic, scientific engineering method for design and structures with fiber reinforced composites. In special attention are structures for aircrafts and structures made from polymer and thermoplastic composites using different high performance fiber and hybrid structures from fiber reinforced composite material and metals.

Already in end of the nineties the department was concerned with the automated manufacturing of fiber reinforced composite material. These research work was the germ cell for computer supported construction and design with modern CAE Tools with use of fiber reinforced composites. No other construction material connects in the same way the necessity for aspects of the fabrication and the production technology during the design of a structure to get, during the design phase already, a high degree of the optimization.

The success of the department is based on this know-how. At the same time the department developed to a valuable partner in national and international research work in the areas of high lift structures, engine structures, structures for transportation as well as general duromere and thermoplastic fiber reinforced composite technologies.

The authority to the interpretation, production and quality assurance of polymer and hybrid structures as well as the joining of the construction units from different metallic and fiber reinforced materials will be developed in the context of the weight minimization and performance increase. The development of closed process chains from the draft to the manufacturing with regard to series or automated manufacturing consistently one further pursues. Controlling the manufacturing and joining is enlarged by the optimization of the thermal processes. On basis of these technological authority, the topic fields „High lift structures“, „Compressor structures for aero engines“ and „ Lightweight structures for terrestrial vehicles“ in internal projects and third party financed projects will be developed. The authority basis becomes enlarged by co-operation with the department „Structural Integrity“, with the Center of Excellence (CoE) “Composite Structures” and the working group „Hybrid material systems and inter metallic“ at the Institute of Materials Research.
