Heinz-Theo Hammes

Heinz Hammes studied safety engineering and has worked at the DLR Space Administration for more than 25 years: first, as a safety engineer for the Spacelab D-2 mission, then as a systems engineer / scientist for several smaller projects at DARA / DLR. Since 1998, he has worked mainly for the SOFIA project and led the mechanical integration of the telescope in the aircraft in the United States. He was involved in the testing of the telescope and of the aircraft and in all major observatory milestones as well. Since June 2016 he is the German Project Manager for SOFIA.

Double anniversary for SOFIA

The coming week will bring two occasions to celebrate with SOFIA. Just yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the virgin flight by SOFIA's 'flying base' on 25 April 1977: operating under the registration N536PA, the Boeing 747 SP flew for the former airline PAN AM, mainly on long-haul routes to Asia or South America. read more

Hundeknochen

Ground-based training for science with SOFIA

Shortly before the start of the first science flight with SOFIA, the mission crew trained for the sequence of in-flight operations. Pilots, technical staff and researchers simulated mission profiles with observation of an astronomical object, aircraft course alterations and changing to observe another celestial object, among other things. All the routines that occur on a regular basis during a science flight were rehearsed. This can involve changing the elevation of the telescope while at the same time tracking the position of the observatory door, finding and maintaining focus on a celestial object and the interaction of the various systems on board the aircraft. read more
