Stefan Baumgartner

Stefan Valentin Baumgartner studied electrical engineering and information technology at the Technical University of Graz. There, he came into contact for the first time with the concept of 'Synthetic Aperture Radar' (SAR), which was to determine his future from that point on. Fascinated by the underlying technology and signal processing, it finally brought him to DLR Oberpfaffenhofen, where he has worked since 2004 as a researcher at the Microwaves and Radar Institute.

His main task is the development of algorithms for large-scale traffic monitoring by air- and space-based multi-channel SAR systems. With these algorithms, land and water vehicles in the radar data can be detected and their speeds, directions and geographical positions can be determined. For the evaluation of the algorithms, Baumgartner uses radar data acquired using the Institute’s airborne radar system, F-SAR, and the German TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X radar satellites.
