On 18 September 2011 DLR is hosting, for the eleventh time, German Aerospace Day in Cologne, offering young and old alike the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of DLR's research work. For those interested in following this special day online and those active in social networks, we will be reporting live throughout the event here on this blog as well as on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

An open day at DLR is always a special event as it enables visitors to obtain an exciting glimpse into areas that are usually inaccessible. Of course, the German Aerospace Day programme includes online participation. Once again, we invite you to actively participate in this special day via social media networks. Free wireless networking will be available almost everywhere on the DLR site.

Die Crew der STS-134-MissionOn German Aerospace Day, astronauts such as long-time Italian ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli and the crew of Space Shuttle Mission STS-134 will be reporting about their work in space. STS-134 Commander Mark Kelly, Pilot Gregory H. Johnson and Mission Specialists Michael Fincke, Greg Chamitoff, Andrew Feustel and Roberto Vittori will all be present.

What have you always wanted to know about astronauts?

Please send us your questions using this blog's comment function. On Sunday, we will try to obtain as many answers from the crew as possible. We will, of course, publish the answers here on this blog.

Much to discover

The top highlights include the first ever appearance of the airborne observatory SOFIA in Europe and the double-deck Airbus A380. What's more, German Aerospace Day offers numerous attractions such as exhibits, helicopter flights and an extensive programme of lectures and activities for children. DLR staff will showcase their work within DLR’s various institutes.

A photo and video competition

Please participate by providing links to your photos and videos of German Aerospace Day on the different social networks. Whether they are pictures or your own impressions of the airborne observatory, control centre or the DLR research aircraft fleet, post your updates on Facebook or Twitter (hashtags #TdLR and #DLR) and upload your videos to YouTube or share them via Twitter. We welcome every contribution.

A jury composed of the visitors themselves will choose the winner online; the photo or video with the most comments and likes will be chosen as winner at the end of the day and announced on this blog. The prize will be a trip for two to the launch event of the European Galileo satellite navigation system.

DLR's online activities in 2009 were a great success

Einblick ins Tweetup-Zelt, Mission STS-134The response on our social media channels during German Aerospace Day 2009 was enormous and has encouraged us to expand our online activities even further this time around.

The first European Space Tweetup on German Aerospace Day in Cologne

One of the social media highlights this year is the first European Space Tweetup, which we are organising with the European Space Agency (ESA). A Tweetup is an informal, educational gathering of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. The first joint DLR/ESA Space Tweetup will be an opportunity to learn more about the European aerospace sector. From July to August, more than 400 people from 29 countries competed for the coveted 60 available spots.
