Jan Wörner

On 1 July 2015, Johann-Dietrich Wörner took up his new post as Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA).

The ‘Jan Wörner’ blog was written by Johann-Dietrich ‘Jan’ Wörner during his time as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR). Jan Wörner wrote all the posts himself and then sent them to DLR Corporate Communications for editing, picture research and online publication.

Johann-Dietrich Wörner was born in Kassel in 1954. He was Chairman of the Executive Board of DLR from 1 March 2007 to 30 June 2015.

Wörner studied civil engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin and the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, where received his doctorate in 1985. In 1982, as part of his studies, he spent two years in Japan, investigating earthquake safety. Until 1990, Wörner worked for the consulting civil engineers König und Heunisch. He then returned to the Technische Universität Darmstadt, where he was appointed to a professorship in Civil Engineering and took over as Head of the Testing and Research Institute. Before being elected President of the Technische Universität Darmstadt in 1995, he held the position of Dean of the Civil Engineering Faculty.

ESA-Ratssitzung und Empfang beim deutschen Botschafter in Paris

Am 16. und 17. März 2011 fand in Paris eine wichtige Sitzung des ESA-Rats statt: Es ging unter anderem um die Internationale Raumstation ISS, die Sicherstellung des europäischen Zugangs zum Weltraum und die Bestätigung von ESA-Direktoren. Am ersten Abend der Ratssitzung haben der Botschafter der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Paris, Reinhard Schäfers, und ich in die Botschaftsresidenz eingeladen. Es war ein guter Anlass, um nicht nur über die deutsche Raumfahrtstrategie im Allgemeinen sondern auch über die Einordnung der Raumfahrtaktivitäten in einer Zeit, in der wir alle von den Nachrichten über die Ereignisse in Japan bedrückt und besorgt sind, zu sprechen. read more

ESA Council meeting and a reception at the German Ambassador's in Paris

An important meeting of the ESA Council took place on 16 and 17 March in Paris. Among other matters, it dealt with the International Space Station (ISS), ensuring European access to space, and the appointment of ESA Directors. On the first evening of the Council meeting, I was invited by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Paris, Reinhard Schäfers, to visit his official residence. It was a good opportunity to speak, not only about German space strategy in general, but also about the coordination of space activities at a time when we are all concerned regarding the news about the events in Japan. read more
