Tom Uhlig

As a child, Thomas Uhlig had the dream of becoming an astronaut, which he almost lost sight of while studying physics: he received a doctorate in the field of nano-cosmos and operation of electron microscopes for small magnetic particles. But after a period of research at Argonne National Laboratory, his passion for space caught up with him again .

In 2005, he moved to the German Aerospace Center, where he first worked as a planner, then as Operations Coordinator and finally as Columbus flight director . A special highlight for him was being flight controller of 1E- Space Shuttle mission at the console – you could hardly get closer to being an astronaut! He now heads the training team at the Columbus Control Centre that introduces the new colleagues to their work in the control room and certifies them.

Public relations is a particular concern for him - he regrets that hardly anyone in Germany knows that one of the main control centers for the ISS is operated in Oberpfaffenhofen. To remedy this, he has started blogging and is the author of a book on the 1E- mission and several other publications.

Boden-Training für die Wissenschaft mit SOFIA

Kurz vor Beginn der ersten Wissenschafts-Flüge mit SOFIA trainiert die Mission Crew den Ablauf eines Fluges. Piloten, Techniker und Wissenschaftler simulieren ein Missionsprofil mit (unter anderem) Beobachtung eines astronomischen Objekts, Kursänderung des Flugzeugs und Wechseln auf ein anderes Objekt. Dabei werden alle Routinen geprobt, die während eines Wissenschafts-Flugs regelmäßig vorkommen: zum Beispiel Änderung der Elevation des Teleskops mit gleichzeitiger Nachführung der Tür des Observatoriums; finden, erkennen und im Fokus Halten eines Objekts; Zusammenspiel der verschiedenen Systeme an Bord des Flugzeugs. read more

Ground-based training for science with SOFIA

Shortly before the start of the first science flight with SOFIA, the mission crew trained for the sequence of in-flight operations. Pilots, technical staff and researchers simulated mission profiles with observation of an astronomical object, aircraft course alterations and changing to observe another celestial object, among other things. All the routines that occur on a regular basis during a science flight were rehearsed. This can involve changing the elevation of the telescope while at the same time tracking the position of the observatory door, finding and maintaining focus on a celestial object and the interaction of the various systems on board the aircraft. read more
