Eric Bershad

Eric Bershad is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Space Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. His main practice involves managing patients with a variety of acute brain injuries in the neuro-ICU, including disturbances in intracranial pressure (ICP) and cerebral blood flow. Given the hypothesized changes in ICP and cerebral blood flow in astronauts in microgravity during long-duration spaceflight, Dr. Bershad became interested in studying this unique condition. He assembled a team of experts in neurology, neuroradiology, ophthalmology, neuroscience, and space medicine, to develop methods for non-invasive monitoring of brain and eye function and structure. to authorpage

MUSC-Team Biolab

Das Biolab-Team am Microgravity User Support Center (MUSC) des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) besteht seit 2003 und derzeit arbeiten dort elf Personen. Biolab wurde 2008 mit einem Space Shuttle zur Internationalen Raumstation ISS gebracht und die erste Aufgabe des Teams war die Inbetriebnahme der Anlage. Jess Bunchek

Jess Bunchek is a plant scientist at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. At the beginning of 2021, she began her one-year residency at the Alfred Wegner Institute’s (AWI) Neumayer Station III as a guest researcher at the DLR Institute of Space Systems. As part of the 10-person overwinter crew, she works at DLR's EDEN ISS greenhouse, located 400 metres from the station. The aim of the greenhouse is to research vegetable cultivation using artificial light and without soil for application in future space missions to the Moon and Mars. to authorpage

Marta Cortesao

Marta Cortesao is a PhD student at the Space Microbiology research group at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), investigating how filamentous fungi adapt to space conditions, such as low gravity or radiation. Ralf Dujmovits

Ralf Dujmovits kennt Länder wie Peru, Kanada, Tansania, Pakistan, Thailand, Norwegen oder auch Island vor allem von oben - wenn er von Bergen wie dem Mount McKinley, dem Huascarán, dem Kilimanjaro oder dem Nanga Parbat blickte. Manfred Gaida

Manfred Gaida ist seit seiner frühsten Jugend vom Weltall fasziniert und wurde schon als Schüler Mitglied der Kölner Sternfreunde. Von 1973 bis 1982 studierte er an den Universitäten Bonn und Köln Astronomie und Physik und war 33 Jahre lang als promovierter Astronom wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im DLR-Raumfahrtmanagement. Matthias Grott is the Principal Investigator for LRAD and was responsible for the design, construction and integration of the instrument into the µNova lander of the private lunar mission IM-2. Ernst Hauber

Ernst Hauber ist Geologe und untersucht die festen Oberflächen der terrestrischen Planeten. Sein Interesse gilt vor allem vulkanischen, tektonischen, und periglazialen Oberflächenformen, wobei er auch intensiv an terrestrischen Analogen arbeitet. Er ist Mitglied in verschiedenen Instrumententeams, die Mars, Merkur, und das Jupitersystem erforschen. Elke Heinemann

Elke Heinemann has been an editor for the DLR web portal since 2003. She has been responsible for the developmen of special sites for missions, such as the Rosetta mission, the International Space Station and Mars Express, for the web portal. to authorpage

Dirk Heinen

Dirk Heinen researches melting probes and their navigation systems. Melting probes are used to penetrate and explore glaciers and ice shelves and to reach underlying subglacial lakes. Currently, the melting probes are used in terrestrial analogue missions with the aim of being able to explore subglacial oceans of the icy moons Europa and Enceladus in situ in the future. to authorpage

Jörn Helbert

Jörn Helbert hat an der Technischen Universität in Braunschweig Physik studiert. Den größten Teil seiner Diplomarbeit fertigte er am Imperial College in London an, wo er auch an der ursprünglichen ESA-Cluster-Mission gearbeitet hat. Mit dem Verlust der Mission beim Start lernte er direkt die Risiken von Weltraummissionen kennen. Das hielt ihn aber nicht davon ab, weiterhin auf diesem Gebiet zu bleiben. Er ging zum Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) und wurde über die Chemie in der Koma des Kometen Hale-Bopp an der Freien Universität Berlin promoviert. to authorpage

Rolf Hempel

Rolf Hempel startete 1992 gemeinsam mit drei Kollegen die internationale "Message-Passing-Interface"-Initiative. Das dort entstandene Programmiermodell MPI ist bis heute der vorherrschende Standard im Hochleistungsrechnen. Seit 2001 ist er im DLR. Hier leitete er zunächst die Einrichtung Simulations- und Softwaretechnik und bis Ende 2022 das Institut für Softwaretechnologie. to authorpage

Tra-Mi Ho

Hauke Hußmann

Hauke Hußmann is acting head of the Planetary Geodesy Department at the DLR Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin. There he focuses on the moons of the outer Solar System, in particular on their internal structure and development. Bernadette Jung has been an editor in the DLR Communications Department since 2010, where she is responsible for the locations Oberpfaffenhofen, Augsburg and Weilheim. Ralph Kahle

Ralph Kahle is the flight dynamics engineer for the TerraSAR-X / TanDEM-X Mission. His responsibilities include precise orbit and attitude determination for the satellites and measuring their position relative to one another, as well as the generation of auxiliary products for radar processing. to authorpage

Bernd Kärcher

Bernd Kärcher has been working at the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics since 1997 and has been an adjunct professor in the Faculty of Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich since 2006. He has headed a number of cross-sectoral DLR projects on aviation and the climate. His main focus is the physics of clouds. to authorpage

Christian Karrasch

Christian Karrasch studied physics at the University of Bonn and earned his doctorate at Ruhr University Bochum. As a doctoral candidate, he prepared material samples and experiments for the electromagnetic levitator (EML). Philip Kausche

Philip Kausche hat an der TU Berlin Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik studiert. Fiona Lenz

Fiona Lenz war bis 2019 Mitglied im Cross-Media-Team und seit 2016 für das DLR auf twitter, facebook und Co. unterwegs. Davor studierte sie Online-Journalismus, als Generation „Digital Native“ naheliegend. Dass sich ihr Weg dann in Richtung Forschung und Wissenschaft entwickelt, hätte Fiona zu Beginn ihres Studiums selbst nicht gedacht. Freya Scheffler-Kayser

Freya Scheffler-Kayser is a manager for the horizons mission at DLR in Bonn. She studied physics and worked in the space industry for 15 years - including a period as process engineer for the German D-2 mission in 1993 - before joining the DLR Space Administration in 2002. Since 2009, she has worked on the ISS operating programme and astronaut issues in the department for human spaceflight, ISS and exploration. to authorpage

Volker Schmid

Volker Schmid heads the DLR team for Alexander Gerst's horizons mission. Schmid completed an apprenticeship as precision engineer. After working in industry for three years as a skilled metalworker in the field of injection moulding machinery manufacturing, he studied aerospace technology at the University of Applied Sciences in Aachen. For his final-year thesis and thereafter, he was involved in system studies and software development, primarily focusing on the design of future space transportation vehicles in the systems analysis department at DLR in Cologne. to authorpage
