Data reception
DFD is the national receiving center for data from earth observation satellites. Data reception and archiving is carried out to support the scientific community, and on behalf of commercial users and the European Space Agency, ESA.
DFD's central antenna systems for high data rate reception are located in Neustrelitz, where they record the flow of data from the German radar satellite TerraSAR-X, the European radar satellites ERS and ENVISAT as well as the Indian IRS-1C/1D and -P3 missions. In addition, data from the CHAMP, BIRD and GRACE missions are received, and a reference station is operated for navigation and positioning of the GPS and GLONASS systems.
In Oberpfaffenhofen data from the meteorological satellites of the NOAA and Meteosat series as well as from the MODIS instrument on the U.S. Terra and Aqua satellites are recorded. The area that can be covered by both locations includes all of Europe, the Near East and northern Africa.
DFD has also developed mobile systems which can be transported and set up at short notice any place on earth. These stations are currently in use in the Chilean sector of the Antarctic, on Spitzbergen, in Gabon (Libreville) and in Mongolia (Ulaanbaatar). A smaller station is located in Brazil (Recife).
