Less aircraft noise and lower fuel consumption – three days of test flights in Frankfurt with the DLR ATRA research aircraft for a new active noise abatement project

Researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will be showcasing current research projects with the objective of making rail transport faster, more efficient, safer and more comfortable at InnoTrans, the world's largest trade fair for train and transport technology. The fair will be held from 20 to 23 September in Berlin.

EMSec – Maritime security

Four days and four cases that pose a threat to maritime security – in several scenarios that took place between 5 and 9 September 2016, the EMSec joint project (Echtzeitdienste für die Maritime Sicherheit - Security; Real-Time Services for Maritime Security) was able to successfully demonstrate research findings from the last three years.

In the Situation Centre, an alarm flashes on the screen – a passenger ferry has changed its planned course for no apparent reason. The AIS (Automatic Identification System) signal eventually disappears from the display. By now, all ship-specific information must have been requested and compared in order to quickly clarify the situation and take immediate action.

DLR tests confirm Otto Lilienthal as the first ancestor of all aviators

German aviation pioneer Otto Lilienthal flew thousands of times, travelling up to 250 metres at speeds reaching 50 kilometres per hour, made him (quite rightly) the first confirmed pilot in human history. His fatal accident was not caused by a flawed design, but was most likely a pilot error.

DLR at the Hannover Trade Fair: Intelligent wind turbines, efficient energy storage and 40 years of energy research

Using their knowledge and expertise in the field of aviation, researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) have developed innovative ideas for wind turbine rotors. During the Hannover Trade Fair, which will take place from 25 to 29 April 2016, they will demonstrate how their intelligent rotor blades adapt to wind loads.

Single European Sky – DLR and NLR join the SESAR 2020 research programme

In 1999, the European Commission launched the Single European Sky (SES) programme to ensure that national airspaces grow together to create a more unified and efficient pan-European airspace. Together with the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (Nationaal Lucht- en Ruimtevaartlaboratorium; NLR), the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has become a member of the EU Single European Sky ATM (Air Traffic Management) research programme, known as SESAR 2020. The aim of SESAR 2020 is to develop new systems for the unification of European airspace and meet the challenges of increasing air traffic.

Structural health monitoring allows detection of damage to aircraft components made of CFRP

Components made of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) are increasingly being used to make aircraft lighter, more comfortable and more economical. In order to make these aircraft even safer and facilitate their maintenance, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has built a large aircraft component out of CFRP, as part of the EU Smart Intelligent Airframe Structures (SARISTU) project. The component can provide information about the size and location of any damage.
