DLR webcast: scientific findings from the ROSAT mission

In this DLR webcast, Joachim Trümper, Scientific Director of ROSAT, explains the findings of the mission. From 1990 to 1999 the satellite observed more than 9000 single sources. ROSAT is the first X-ray satellite to have scanned the entire sky, and in doing so made first-time discoveries such as X-rays from comets. To date, around 8500 scientific publications have been released on the ROSAT findings.

Joachim Trümper was the director of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik; MPE) in Garching near Munich from 1975 to 2001, and Honorary Professor of Astrophysics at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München. From 1971 to 1975, Trümper was an astronomy professor and the director of the Astronomical Institute at the University of Tübingen. In a 1975 presentation to the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology, the stellar researcher suggested building a satellite equipped with a large X-ray telescope – and the rest is ROSAT history.
