LamAiR: the positive effect of negative sweep

Under the LamAiR project, DLR has developed a passenger plane configuration with a forward-swept wing.

By 2020, aircraft are supposed to be 50 percent more economical. Under the LamAiR project, DLR has developed a passenger plane configuration with a forward-swept wing which may contribute towards reaching this goal. Because of the forward sweep, contour flows around the wing become largely laminar, i.e. low-turbulence, which markedly reduces aerodynamic drag. To determine the dynamic flight behaviour of such an aircraft architecture, a wind tunnel measuring campaign with a scale model was run under the NumEx project.
