Miniaturised laser communication terminal for aviation.

Laser-based communication systems for aircraft and unmanned airborne vehicles (UAVs) have been studied at DLR for more than five years. In a multitude of flight campaigns on the Do228 research aircraft, the technology has successfully demonstrated its serviceability and efficiency. Laser communication can handle data rates in excess of 1Gbps, a volume that cannot be reached by conventional radio communication. In 2010, a prototype of a high-speed data link from aircraft to aircraft or between an aircraft and a ground station was first shown at the ILA. This prototype has meanwhile been developed into a miniaturised laser communication terminal (MLT-20) with an optical aperture of 20 mm. Weighing less than five kilograms, it may be used in a multitude of flight scenarios.
