    High performance ceramic matrix composites to boost aircraft propeller brakes.

During maintenance on a propeller aircraft, engine propellers must be safely prevented from rotating. Additionally, the propeller rotation should dynamically be stopped after engine shut down in ground wind conditions. Fibre reinforced ceramics, originally developed for thermal protection systems in spacecraft, provide an important support. High temperature resistant  ceramic brake pads are very powerful and allows engine service even at strong wind conditions. In the A400M, brake discs of just 120 mm in diameter can stop the 5.3 m propellers within few seconds. The aerospace supplier UMBRA Cuscinetti S.p.A. has developed a dedicated special braking system. The high performance ceramic brake pads were contributed by DLR, bringing in its experiences from various applications in space, automotive industry and emergency brake systems.
