The RoboMobil: as nimble as a crab

Developed by DLR, the RoboMobil (ROMO) embodies a two-seater electro-mobility concept derived from robotics and planetary rover technology. Its characteristic element is the so-called wheel robot: drive, steering, shock-absorption, and brake elements are integrated in each of the four wheels. The wheel robots are co-ordinated by a smart central controller. Caster steering enables the RoboMobil to move in crab-style, and turn on the spot. This maximum manoeuvrability comes into its own in big cities and in the logistics sector. ROMO may be operated either by a driver supported by shared-autonomy concepts derived from space robotics, or in fully autonomous mode.
