Mars Express – the Red Planet in 3-D

ESA's Mars Express space probe bears some resemblance to the legendary VW beetle: it goes on and on and on. Europe's first planetary probe has been exploring Mars since 2003, having encircled the planet more than eleven thousand times. Built in Germany and operated by DLR, the probe's High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) is the first camera system to map a planet systematically in high-resolution 3-D colour images. Based on the data of the HRSC, a topographical image atlas of Mars will be completed by 2014. HRSC and the six other experiments on Mars Express have yielded fundamental insights into the geological evolution and the climate history of Mars.
