Your mission:

The Satellite Networks department of the Institute of Communications and Navigation plays since many years a leading role in Europe in the conception and investigation of novel system concepts, transmission techniques, protocols and applications for Satellite Communications.

Its optical communication group develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers such as airplanes or satellites and optical ground stations. One application of optical data links is the transmission of aerial imagery, acquired by an aircraft or helicopter, enabling real-time access to the data in e.g. disaster-relief applications. To allow a link availability of close to 100 %, a hybrid-link-system is currently under development. It combines the high data-rate of the optical communication link with the high availability of a traditional RF communication system. The system will be tested within real aircraft experiments.

Main Tasks: The software for transmitter and receiver of the hybrid communication system shall be developed and tested. The main focus is on evaluation of algorithms to choose the corresponding communication link based on the current link status, the implementation of these algorithms and the exchange of status information between the communication partners. The system performance and link availability shall be tested in relevant environment in laboratory or field tests.

Your qualifications:

  • study of Informatics, Electrical Engineering, or similar
  • profound knowledge of C/C++ and Labview
  • profund networking knowledge
  • self-sustained working behaviour
  • basic understanding of Hardware/Software-Codesign
