Your mission:

Within the Institute for Space System’s department System Analysis Space Segment, the EDEN team analyzes and develops concepts and systems for bio-regenerative life support systems for future human space exploration and in particular technologies for plant cultivation in space. Concurrently, the EDEN team intends to actively promote the spin-off of such technologies into terrestrial applications.

Within the scope of a project aimed at developing a greenhouse module for arid regions (Morocco, Egypt), the student would focus on innovative solutions for atmosphere management, in particular for thermal management, water desalination and water recovery.

Specifically, the student would focus on the following items:

  • a literature study of existing and conceptual thermal management systems and water recovery and desalination technologies
  • development of comprehensive atmosphere management system concepts
  • an analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of the different concepts and a trade-off in light of the project-specific requirements
  • determining the required system performance characteristics

The student would work closely with the project team and its partners, as well as other students, in an iterative design process.

Your qualifications:

  • engineering student (mechanical, aerospace, electrical, etc.)
  • knowledge of thermal analysis and thermal management systems
  • good skills with MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio)
  • excellent English proficiency
  • minimum duration: 6 months (preferred start date in August or September 2017)
