Your mission:

DLR, Solar Research is active in developing processes to utilise energy from concentrated solar radiation in the form of Solar Fuels and other chemical commodities. High temperature endothermal reactions are powered by solar heat collected at a solar tower. To couple solar energy effectively to the respective reactions converting raw materials like water, CO2, natural gas, waste products or other into valuable products, specific components and processes need to be designed and evaluated.The task of this postdoctoral position is to develop and to technoeconomically evaluate processes for solar thermo-chemical production of commodities like hydrogen, syngas, methanol, ammonia, sulfur, aluminium or cement.

The related projects comprise the following tasks:

  • modelling of solar specific components like solar reactors
  • component design
  • development and application of steady-state and transient and process models
  • thermodynamic analysis of processes
  • calculation and evaluation of energy and mass balances of solar processes
  • energetic and economic optimisation of processes
  • solar field design and optimisation
  • potential analysis of solar technologies market studies
  • Life Cycle Assessment

The results of the modelling and of the techno-economic studies will be used to adjust development directions of hardware and component development.

Your qualifications:

  • degree in Chemical or Mechanical engineering or Technical Chemistry or related
  • PhD examination
  • experience in Solar Technologies
  • experience in Chemical Process Design and Modelling
  • knowledge in Process Modelling software
  • experience in Techno-economic analyses
  • fluent English
  • optional: knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment
  • optional: publications in ISI journals
