Your mission:

The Satellite Networks department of the Institute of Communications and Navigation plays since many years a leading role in Europe in the conception and investigation of novel system concepts, transmission techniques, protocols and applications for Satellite Communications.

The optical communication group of DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links.The system development covers several disciplines such as optics, mechanics, electronics and programming.

The successful applicant will support our team in the development of an optical deep space communication system for data transmission from spacecraft and probes operating beyond typical satellite orbits. Using optical communication links for spacecraft downlinks may increase the available bandwidth for future space exploration missions.

The subject offers several Internship and Master Thesis topics like:

  • evaluation of suitable optical deep-space communication methods.
  • electrical design of a highly sensitive optical receiver
  • design of an optical terminal

Your qualifications:

  • study direction of optics, electronics or physics (Master level)
  • understanding of digital communication methods
  • some practical experience with electronics from university or hobby projects
