Your mission:

At the German Aerospace Center, large-scale scientific datasets are generated on a daily basis. These require adjusted processing methods to extract valuable information. Interactive exploration allows the investigation of unknown data and the identification of new findings. By means of distributed software systems, large-scale datasets can be processed on supercomputers and can be streamed to visualization frontends for interactive explorations. Datasets in mind are from numerical simulations as computational fluid dynamics, aeroacoustics, atmospheric physics and material science. But also sensor data from earth observation satellites and space missions should be prepared for real-time analysis.

Your mission will be the investigation and development of methods as a team member of our interactive visualization group.

Following tasks will be addressed:

  • investigation of new parallel und distributed approaches for the post-processing of large-scale scientific datasets
  • view-dependent data streaming and multi-resolution rendering based on frame-rate and view-point
  • development of topology-based extraction and tracking methods for scalar, vector, and tensor fields
  • investigation of optimal multi-resolution data structures for data storage to distributed memory systems to GPUs
  • integration of efficient rendering methods on graphics cards
  • evaluation and integration of rendering methods for immersive environments (virtual reality, VR) and mixed environments (augmented reality, AR)
  • investigation and integration of interaction and communication interfaces for multi-touch display walls and collaborative and distributed immersive environments (from head-mounted displays to CAVE-like systems)
  • supporting plug-in development for Paraview with VTK

Your qualifications:

  • You have an excellent Master in Computer Science or in a similar research direction
  • You are an expert in object-oriented software development in C++
  • You possess a profound knowledge in Scientific Visualization with OpenGL
  • You are a team player, creative, and able to work independent and self-motivated
  • You are fluent in spoken and written English (knowledge of German is an asset)
  • in-depth knowledge in multi-resolution data structures and mathematical foundation of scientific data post-processing is a plus
  • experiences in parallelization interfaces like MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, or CUDA are an asset
  • interest in research activities for Virtual Reality and High-Performance Computing is advantageous
  • knowledge in software Engineering methods (Continuous Integration, Git, etc.) is a plus
  • ideally, experiences with software development on Windows and Linux
