Student Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics or similar: Visualization of Large Magnetic Field

Your mission:

The development of magnetic confinement fusion is a future source for low-cost power.In order to confine the burning plasma inside a tokomak, physisists simulate the magnetic filed inside a toroidal shaped device. Nowadays, the huge amount of data produced by such simulations can no longer be visualized by standard softwares such as ParaView.  Therefore, visualization of large scaled magnetic fields is strongly required for the analysis of tokomak simulation. This thesis focuses on the magnetic field visualization on a large multicore architecture. The major tasks of this thesis include:

  • Visualizing the magnetic field simulated by Elmfire, preferred with streamlines
  • Parallelize your algorithm on large clusters
  • Analysis and evaluation of how the visualization can help in understanding the stable plasma equilibrium
