Energy suppliers need a power forecast and optimised operation strategies for their wind and solar power plants. In order to provide these, existing methods of numerical weather prediction are complemented and refined, or even completely redeveloped, to meet the management challenges of the energy system. Forecasts for the next few hours are made on the basis of observation data (for instance satellite images), by extrapolating from the changes that took place over the past few hours to expected developments over the next few hours. Forecasts for the coming days are made using one or more numerical models. Again, additional processing of the results obtained directly from the meteorological models is required in order to translate them into the parameters needed for the energy system.
