Testing the Exomars rover in Mars-like conditions
It groans and clicks. The ExoMars rover drives steadily on its flexible metal wheels across a tank filled with sand, gravel and rocks. But it is not just any old sand; it mimics that found on another planet. To be sure that the ExoMars rover will be able to move safely on Mars in 2018, scientists at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) are testing a model under conditions which are as realistic as possible – in a tank filled with 17 tons of specially selected sand.
