Andreas Liersch from the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology tells us that an aircraft can fly more quietly when the engines are mounted above the wings and the noise has reduced. This is a completely new aircraft concept, and would look quite different. The aircraft of the future can save fuel through large, contra-rotating and open rotors.
