The Desertec concept envisages solar and wind energy generation of electricity in the countries of North Africa and the Middle East and to channel it over power grids to the local population and, in part, to Europe. To this end, solar thermal power plants are to be built in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. There are also plans for solar tower power plants that, inter alia, are being assessed at the test-site of the Plataforma Solar de Almería in Spain.
