An all-round view in space: Panoramic dome on its way to the ISS


Astronauts on the International Space Station will soon be able to enjoy a special view. The 130th shuttle mission lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on 8 February 2010 at 10:14 Central European Time. Space Shuttle Endeavour carried the 'Cupola' and the 'Tranquility' station module into space. The Cupola has seven windows and will offer a previously unavailable panoramic view of Earth.

The image shows movements in the Earth's crust caused by the earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010. The colour scale shows the extent of the displacements, from green for small displacements to deep red for movements of two metres. The red-coloured area was displaced by about 80 centimetres during the earthquake, in the direction of the oblique radar view.

Future of flight - DLR research with ATRA

It is the largest member of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) research fleet: the ATRA (Advanced Technology Research Aircraft), a modified Airbus A320, has supported research since it was brought into use in the end of 2008. From new types of vibration tests through the 'Competitive Airport' project to low-emission flying, all experiments with ATRA were successful.

Designer fuels for aviation

Designer fuels based on coal, natural gas and sustainable biomass could, in the future, replace kerosene in aviation. In the search for alternatives to crude oil, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has been conducting research into new synthetic fuels for aviation for several years. Current results show that future fuels may even be superior to kerosene with regard to environmental friendliness and engine reliability.
