From 6 June until 5 July 2006, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will exhibit 'A New Perspective on Mars' at the UNO City lobby in Vienna. Free of charge, the exhibition will include fascinating large-format 3D images in a definition never seen before, taken by the German-operated High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) installed onboard the European Mars Express space probe. In addition, a wide variety of information about the planet Mars, its moons and the exploration of the Red Planet will be presented.

The Mars Express probe is Europe's first independent mission to another planet. Since December 2003, the probe has been circling the Red Planet, enhancing our knowledge about its geology, mineralogy and atmosphere. The main objective of the mission is to search for traces of water, which in the early days of the planet must have flowed across its surface in large quantities - a search in which DLR researchers are playing a key role.

The DLR's exhibition will show the most recent images and scientific insights produced by the ESA's current Mars Express mission. Alongside other research instruments, the mission carries the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). This HRSC is the first-ever system capable of taking photographs of planetary surfaces that combine high definition, colour, and a 3D effect. DLR is responsible for the operation of the HRSC.

Awaiting you at the exhibition is truly 'A New Perspective on Mars ':

  • Fascinating large-format 3D images sharper than anything ever seen before taken by the HRSC high-performance camera (the largest image is more than 20 metres long)
  • Brand-new scientific insights that make our image of Mars clearer than ever before
  • Information about Mars and its moons, Phobos and Deimos
  • The history of the exploration of Mars
  • Films and digital images of Mars showing a wide variety of background information
  • Visions and perspectives of Martian research

The concept and content of the exhibition were designed by the Experimental team at DLR Berlin-Adlershof location in cooperation with Professor Dr Neukum, the head of the HRSC science team at the Free University of Berlin. The images shown were developed by the DLR Institute of Planetary Research in cooperation with the Institute of Geological Sciences at the Berlin FU. Initiated by the DLR Space Agency, the exhibition was funded by the Federal Ministry of Research.

From 6 June until 5 July, the exhibition may be viewed at the Vienna International Centre as part of a guided tour. For more information about these guided tours, please contact:
