DLR site Lampoldshausen


The DLR site at Lampoldshausen, which employs some 230 staff, was founded in 1959 by space pioneer Professor Eugen Sänger to act as a test site for liquid rocket engines. The site went into operation in 1962.

DLR tests new nozzle for Ariane 5 main engine

With the last two tests completed, the current test campaign for Ariane 5's Vulcain 2 main engine at DLR's facilities in Lampoldshausen reached its culmination at the turn of last year. The team tested a new nozzle design (codenamed NE-X) for the first time.

30 Years of Ariane - an unique success story

24 December 1979: The new European launcher lifted off from the South American launch site at Kourou, French Guyana, with thundering engines – a day of enormous importance for the entire European space effort. The German Institute of Aviation and Spaceflight Research and Development (DFVLR), the forerunner of today’s DLR, played an essential role in the story.

Clean water from sunlight


5 November 2009
At the German Aerospace Center (DLR) facility in Lampoldshausen, a new solar water-cleaning system is using sunlight to remove organic and inorganic contamination, which is rather difficult to break down, from waste water. The heart of the system is a new type of solar receiver that obtains the energy required for the removal of a variety of pollutants from solar radiation. This new system, based on DLR expertise, has been launched under the name 'RayWOx'.
