Today. it is possible to recognise ash and gas clouds from volcanic eruptions with satellite-based instruments. For example, data from the European GOME-2-instrument on board the satellite MetOp-A is processed at DLR on behalf of EUMETSAT. The derived trace gas information is linked with DLR models to make predictions about pollutant propagation. This diagram shows the concentration of sulphur dioxide content over the North Sea. The star shows the location where concentration is the highest; the ash cloud of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull is also located there.
