22 seconds – and many months: the long way to doing research in weightlessness


Olympia Kyriopoulos does research on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Certain effects come into play that can only partly be investigated in a laboratory on Earth, where they are influenced by gravity. Therefore, Olympia Kyriopoulos needed to conduct experiments in weightlessness as well. "It was a childhood dream come true for me," she writes about her parabolic flight. Life under extreme conditions - space research at the bottom of the ocean


Kristina Beblo gives an account of her research in the field of radiation biology. The young biologist and DLR staff member is investigating if life could be possible elsewhere in the universe, even under extreme conditions. In order to answer this question, she also conducts research at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. In her travelogue, she describes an expedition to a place many thousands of kilometres away and several thousand metres below the surface.
