Future technology for energy supply and resource-efficient energy conversion were the focus of presentations on the occasion of today's visit of EU Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Stuttgart. In addition to the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, he visited the Institute for Combustion Engineering - closely cooperating with the DLR Institute of Thermodynamics and Heat Technology at the University of Stuttgart.

Prof. Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Chairman of DLR Executive Board welcomed the EU Commissioner and said: "I am very pleased with the visit of the EU Commissioner and the appreciation of the Commission for the work of the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics. The EU is for us an important partner in the development and promotion of new technologies for sustainable energy supplies to Europe."

Andris Piebalgs underlined the importance of research and development activities for European energy policy: "Knowledge and research gives us the opportunity to develop political activities," said the Commissioner.

Expanding renewable energy a help in reaching our climate targets

After the official welcome, Dr Wolfram Krewitt, Head of Systems Analysis and Technology Assessment of the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics explained DLR's ideas about European energy supplies. The systematic development of renewable energy can help us reach our ambitious goals in helping to protect European climate. At the same time, they can protect investments in renewable energy sources in these times of constantly-rising energy prices, and will reduce our dependence on energy imports.

Andris Piebalgs also visited research facilities in the areas of solar research, fuel cells and thermal process engineering. Richard Wang, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Baden-Wuerttemberg also welcomed the Commissioner: "I am pleased that you selected DLR for your visit. It is one of our leading institutes in the field of energy research."

In addition, the EU Commissioner saw representatives of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs Ministerial headed by Karl Greißing and the head of the unit responsible for fundamental questions of energy policy, Joachim Sautter.

He was accompanied by Stuttgart Mayor Wolfgang Schuster, local energy expert Dr Juergen Görres and Prof. Wolfram Ressel, Rector of the University of Stuttgart.
