DLR review of the year 2009

An exciting, eventful and successful year is coming to an end for the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Our review presents the highlights of the year - from the DLR HALO research aircraft through the appointment of ‘our’ astronaut, Alexander Gerst, to the first flight of the fuel cell aircraft Antares and the record number of visitors on Aerospace Day. Webcast of DLR Annual General Meeting

On Thursday, 26 November 2009, the Annual General Meeting of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) took place in Berlin. The meeting concluded in the evening with a colourful science show, featuring highlights of DLR research projects carried out during 2009. DLR broadcast this event via a live webcast, which is now available on demand.

Berlin, a journey through time: animated aerial and satellite pictures on the anniversary of the Basic Law

The 60th anniversary of the entry into force of the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany, Basic Law for short, was celebrated on 23 May 2009. The history of Germany after the Second World War is inseparably intertwined with the history of Berlin. The development of the two German states could be seen here in microcosm and is also reflected in the architecture, buildings, roads and open spaces – and particularly with regard to the Berlin Wall. The historical progression of these buildings has now been depicted by scientists at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) in animations composed of aerial and satellite pictures of Berlin from 1928 to the present day. The destruction caused by war, reconstruction, GDR buildings, unification and Berlin today can be clearly seen.

DLR: Year in review in images


18 December 2008
German ESA astronaut Hans Schlegel brought the Columbus space laboratory to the ISS, DLR energy researchers succeeded in generating hydrogen using concentrated solar radiation, DLR engineers developed the train of the future, and the avionics system of DLR’s ATRA research aircraft was powered by zero-emission fuel cell technology for the first time. These and many other achievements are highlighted in DLR’s 2008 year in review in images.

DLR-Webcast: Decision Support System - Animation


11 November 2008
On 11 November 2008, almost four years after the devastating tsunami catastrophe, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia inaugurated the InaTEWS tsunami early warning system (Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System) in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. Germany has made a significant contribution to this system.
