Department: Science Communication and Visualization

The work of the Science Communication and Visualization Unit (WV) is primarily intended for laypeople, the media, and scientists active in fields other than remote sensing. Complex science topics are made accessible in a manner appropriate to these target groups and new, intuitively comprehensible forms of presentation are developed. The focus is on visual communication and the Internet.

The Science Communication and Visualization department acquaints the public with remote sensing topics and provides explanations. In this way a public discourse is facilitated and potential users learn about the findings and potentials of remote sensing. Remote Sensing, or more precisely earth observation, is interdisciplinary and useful in a multitude of fields. It is not only a tool for geologists, biologists, or the designers of solar energy facilities; it is equally important for public institutions, industry and the general public.

The department's portfolio of services includes:

  • Short films and animations
  • Science illustrations
  • Stereo projections
  • Interactive visualizations

  • Internet editing of the EOC portal
  • Internet editing of diverse project portals
  • Developing and supervising DLR_School_Lab experiments

  • Exhibits
  • Book projects
  • Presentations at trade fairs
  • PR Material.

The expertise concentrated here can be drawn on by other DLR institutes and outside organizations via the GeoVisualization Center, a DFD service.
