Data guide

This data guide will assist you in the process of retrieving data from DLR and other data providers. The guide comprises the following components:

Left navigation column

  • Recent weather imagery of Europe from DFD’s receiving facilities at Oberpfaffenhofen
  • Value-added products produced operationally by DFD: sea surface temperature SST, land surface temperature LST, vegetation index NDVI and global ozone maps

Right navigation column

The block Data policy provides links to relevant documents concerning data access and utilization regulations

The block DFD data services offers direct links to the user interfaces of DFD archives and services:

  • EOWEB is the interface to the German satellite data archive at DFD
  • WDC-RSAT is the World Data Center for Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, hosted at DFD
  • ZKI (Center for Satellite-based Crisis Information) provides access to thematic maps from recent disaster monitoring
  • The Fire service offers fire maps of Europe on a daily schedule
  • SWACI deals with space weather
  • CORINE provides standardized land use classifications for Europe

The block Data from missions comprises links to earth observation missions with DLR contributions.

  • TerraSAR-X, is a German radar sensor recording in the X-band with a spatial resolution of 1 m
  • SRTM, global coverage of digital elevation model data DEM from the Shuttle-Radar Topography Mission 2000
  • ENVISAT, the European environmental satellite equipped with various atmospheric sounders, imaging radar and infrared spectrometers
  • The Rapid Eye Science Archive RESA allows access to data for registered scientific evaluations
  • METOP-A GOME, ozone data from the GOME sensor on board Meteosat

of various commercial providers of remote sensing satellite data:

  • EURIMAGE, sells data from GeoEye-1, Ikonos, QuickBird, WorldView-1, Landsat, ENVISAT, ERS-1 and-2, Radarsat, Aster and ALOS
  • EUMETSAT offers Meteosat and NOAA satellite data
  • EUSI (European Space Imaging) sells high resolution optical data from IKONOS, World-View-1- and -2
  • EUROMAP is the official provider of data from the Indian missions IRS-1C and D, and IRS-P
  • Infoterrais the distributor of high resolution radar data from TerraSAR-X
  • SPOT-Image holds SPOT-5 and stereo data
  • RapidEye sells data from their high resolution optical satellites

The block Data for free contains links to space agencies, public services and universities that offer specific data sets free of charge, such as:

  • NASA- MODIS provides global data takes from the moderate resolution sensors TERRA and AQUA
  • NASA Visible Earth is an archive of thematically categorized satellite images from different sources
  • GLCF, the Global Land Cover Facility hosted by the University of Maryland keeps data from NOAA, MODIS; Landsat, ASTER, SRTM
  • ESA Earth Watching focuses on the monitoring of natural disasters

Which access and utilization restrictions have to be recognized?

Data from earth observation satellites are used for scientific research and environmental monitoring, but also for commercial applications This is why such satellites are built and operated both by space agencies and commercial enterprises.

  • The Earth Observation Center (EOC) receives and archives earth observation data from various missions. This is done for its own purposes, but also in cooperation with ESA and commercvial companies.
  • In general, the data belongs to the satellite operator, however archiving, catalog retrieval and ordering services are in many cases provided by DLR. Depending on the respective rights, data sets may be gratis or subject to a charge. In addition, for high resolution data the restrictions of the German Satellite Data Security Law apply.
  • The EOC produces from raw data a variety of value-added products offered by EOWEB, this web-portal or other user services. Examples are thematic maps, scientific animations and images for public relations applications.
  • We also support the scientific evaluation and utilization of data.
