The aerial camera systems used by IMF’s Photogrammetry and Image Analysis section were developed both for research purposes and for operational use in disaster control. They employ off-the-shelf high-end digital cameras and are accordingly an affordable alternative to conventional aerial recoding systems. All systems have an integrated GPS/IMU navigation system as well as their own processing unit for automatically generating orthoimages from the aerial recording, allowing a first data assessment while still in flight. Afterward, all the data can be transferred via an integrated microwave link to a mobile ground station where they can be further evaluated or incorporated into geoinformation systems and Web services.
