Workshop on Risk Modelling and Vulnerability Assessment in Bandung

The joint Indonesian-German working group on risk modeling and vulnerability assessment was initiated in the year 2006 and is coordinated by LIPI and DLR. The working group is a co-operation between the German-Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System (GITEWS) and its Indonesian counterpart (Ina-TEWS) under the umbrella of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and Indonesian State Ministry of Research and Technology (RISTEK).

The joint Indonesian-German working group met during a 5 day workshop to present and discuss results and products from risk assessment relevant for disaster management and early warning. The main goals and topics of the workshop were:

1. Present and discuss results of the broad-scale assessment of risk modeling
2. Present and discuss common guidelines for risk assessment
3. Present and discuss results relevant for early warning and disaster management
4. Present preliminary results of detailed assessments in the pilot areas

The risk assessment products deliver specific information reflecting the different phases within the disaster management cycle. Hence the applicability for disaster management in the fields of disaster risk reduction and response is ensured. That means that the presented results are delivering sound information to contribute in the fields of:

• Preparedness and awareness creation
• Evacuation and contingency planning
• Early warning
• Response to early warning
• Emergency relief
• Recovery (reconstruction and rehabilitation)

During the workshop it was recognized that the presented risk assessment products deliver an important source of information, contributing to disaster management needs at the national and local level. It was the 4th meeting bringing together relevant scientists and decision makers in the fields of risk assessment and disaster management.

The workshop was conducted jointly with InWent (Capacity Building International, Germany). Altogether 76 participants from various Indonesian, German and international organizations were involved, actively contributing in the field of tsunami risk assessment, such as:
