Research areas of composite structures and adaptive systems

The future innovations in composite structures and adaptive systems will happen from the material to the system level. They primarily serve the

  • Increase of safety
  • Increase in functionality
  • Cost reduction
  • Increase of comfort
  • Reduction of environmental impact

The research work of the Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems are orientated on aerospace applications as well as transportation and energy. On the other hand the Institute develops new basic principles in adaptronics, structural mechanics and composite technology.

The Institute has four thematic fields in the direction of applied research (downstream research):

  • Materials and processes
  • Composite lightweight structures
  • Simulation tools and testing
  • Active lightweight systems

The basic research (upstream research) of the Institute is focussed on the following four thematic fields

  • Nano-based material systems
  • Robust design
  • Manufacturing process and process simulation
  • Multifunctional lightweight structures
