The Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems pursues two approaches in nanotechnology:

Carbon Nanotube Actuators

Adaptive Systems require often higher active strain than provided by piezo-ceramic actuators combined with a high stiffness. Moreover, light weight structures demand a low structural density. Carbon Nanotubes satisfy these requirements.

Composites with matrices doped by nanoparticles

Nanoscaled additives (particle size of 1-100 nm) are able to improve strength, stiffness, and impact resistance of fibre reinforced composites. Nanoparticles are able to reduce shrinkage.
