Flight Facility Oberpfaffenhofen

Head of the Department: Dr. Monika Krautstrunk

The Flight Facility Oberpfaffenhofen of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is Europe’s largest operator of research aircraft for atmospheric research and earth observation. The highly modified aircraft fleet operates worldwide for various research organisations, public authorities and private companies. The structure of the facility reflects the variety of related services which are available to the scientific users of the research aircraft. Scientific missions on DLR airborne platform profit from the longterm experience of these groups in their specific field.

The Flight Facility Oberpfaffenhofen of the DLR is in close cooperation with many international organisations and embedded in the European community of research flight facilities. The Facility has been involved in several European projects since the 4th framework program of the European Commission concerning networking (EURASER, EUFAR) training (STAAARTE) and access (CAATER) issues.

EUFAR starts Funding of Transnational Access to European Research Aircraft

04. July 2005
Within EUFAR researchers from European countries which do not operate similar infrastructures can apply for funding of flight hours. EUFAR is an Integrated Infrastructure Initiative that brings together 28 leading European institutions and companies involved in airborne research. A total amount of 450 flight hours will be funded by EUFAR, corresponding to about 44 user groups each flying 10-flight-hour projects. Access is offered to 23 instrumented aircraft ranging from an ultra-light aircraft to a 4 turbo-jets aircraft. DLR participates with its two research aircraft Falcon 20 and Cessna 208. Proposals can be submitted until 31st of December, 2007.
