EUFAR is an Integrated Infrastructure Initiative that brings together 28 leading European institutions and companies involved in airborne research, operating 32 instrumented aircraft (status of Mai 2007).
EUFAR, being a user-driven project, aims at:
- co-ordinating the network for exchanging knowledge, sharing developments, and building the unified structure that is required for improving access to the infrastructures;
- providing users with Transnational Access (TA) to the infrastructures;
- extending TA to national funding sources;
- promoting airborne research in the academic community;
- developing research activities in airborne instrumentation.
Within EUFAR, access is offered to 23 instrumented aircraft ranging from an ultra-light aircraft carrying few kilograms at a low speed (ENDURO), to a 4 turbo-jets aircraft carrying several tonnes of instrumentation payload
(BAe-146).
A total amount of 450 flight hours will be funded by EUFAR, corresponding to about 44 user groups each flying 10-flight-hour projects. Before being offered funded flight hours, applicants must satisfy some Eligibility Criteria and pass the Selection Procedure.
Priority is given to new inexperienced users and researchers from countries which do not operate similar infrastructures.
The competition is open from April 2005 to 31st December, 2007, but with potential flying opportunities until 30th September 2008.
DLR offers access to its two research aircraft Falcon 20 and Cessna 208.
A new proposal continuing EUFAR will be prepared within 2007.
